A 15th century illuminated treasure in Paris
It is one of the most outstanding examples of eclectic lighting in the French books of Paris. This codex was created at beginning of the 15th century, ostenta ostenta 26 full-page thumbnails, whose illuminated details dazzle, together with innumerable initials decorated in gold.
It is a testimony of exceptional artistic skills. Its diversified iconography reflects the artistic heterogeneity and the wealth of influences that marked the late Renaissance, an era of experimentation and fusion of styles.
Preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Library
The codex occupies a place of honor in the majestic Vatican Apostolic Library, identified with the coding Pal.lat. 1988.
This sanctuary of knowledge and erudition treasures unique treasures from the most ancient scriptures to masterpieces of medieval enlightenment, such as the «Legend of the Holy Cross», which continue to inspiring admiration and devotion at the present time.
What is the legend of the Santa Faz?
Also known as the «Légende de S. Voult de Luques», account that an image of Christ was miraculously sculpted by an angel.
According to legend, Nicodemus tried to sculpt the face of Christ, but failed. When he rested, an angel completed the sculpture. The image reached Italy on a bareboat, increasing its mystery and veneration. Eventually, it spread through Catalonia and became a important religious symbol.
This story illustrates how the religious and miraculous narratives in medieval Europe, associated with the veneration of relics and sacred objects.
